The Program

UConn Nursing in Puerto Rico is a new collaborative effort between the UConn School of Nursing, the UConn Puerto Rican and Latin American Institute and the University of Puerto Rico School of Nursing.  The program is designed to give Nursing students an intensive immersion into Hispanic culture in the thriving city of San Juan, while at the same time providing all the required coursework for majors in their 7th semester.  The theoretical and practical components of Nursing and Clinical Science for Adults with Acute Health Issues, Clinical and Nursing Science for Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing and Ethical Ways of Knowing will be the focus of this one semester program.

Through clinical conferences, case/care study presentations, clinical evaluations, and keeping a journal, you will have the opportunity during this program to 1) provide direct nursing care to patients and families; 2) learn about the rich and diverse heritage of the Puerto Rican people, 3) learn about complementary therapies that are utilized on the island 4) have regular dialogue with your counterparts in San Juan, and 5) improve your Spanish. Since the Puerto Rican population is the fastest growing Latino population in the Connecticut area, the experience of working and living in Puerto Rico will be of enormous help in your future nursing career.
