Recognizing a growing demand for internationally-experienced engineering and computing graduates, a consortium of leading universities around the world have established the Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E3). Administered in the United States by the Institute of International Education (IIE), this program provides opportunities for students at member institutions to receive academic credit for courses taken at an overseas institution, and practical training in a foreign setting for a summer, semester, or academic year. The program offers the opportunity for American students to study in one of 17 countries overseas, and for international students to study at partner campuses in the United States.
By studying abroad, Global E³ students gain the necessary foreign language abilities, cross-cultural skills, and professional experience to excel in the multinational/multicultural business environment of the 21st century. The importance of this unique program has been recognized by the National Science Foundation, AT&T Foundation, and the US Department of Education, all of which provided the start-up funds for the program.
Provided you meet the admission requirements of the partnering institution, you may study at Global E³ universities in Australia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Turkey and the United Kingdom (all of which offer courses presented in English), as well as participating universities where courses are taught in the native language. These languages include German (Germany and Austria), French (France), Italian (Italy), Swedish (Sweden), and Spanish (Mexico and Spain). You will be given the opportunity to complement your study abroad experience with an internship.Paid practical internships in industry can be arranged by students through contacts provided by host institutions.
The Academics
As a UConn student, you may study in any country overseas where there is a participating Global E³ university, provided that a Global E³ member university in that country accepts you for study. Each participating university sets its own criteria for student eligibility, including requirements for grade point average and foreign language ability.
Almost all engineering disciplines are available among the many Global E³ member institutions, although not every discipline is available at every school. Please see the list of participating members and visit the home pages of the universities to determine if your preferred courses are offered. Some humanities courses are also available as electives if you wish to pursue other interests in addition to your engineering studies.
As a Global E3 participant, you will receive credit from UConn for the courses you take abroad. The internship component is an especially valuable element in strengthening your international and professional competency.
In
order to earn credit at UConn for courses completed on this program,
individual courses must be approved by a designated UConn course
evaluator and assigned a UConn course number.Complete instructions for this process can be found under Getting Academic Crediton the navigation bar on the left of the Study Abroad Homepage.
Students will be housed in a variety of settings, depending on the facilities provided by each individual institution. Please consult the website for each university to learn about housing options, as well as location and proximity to nearby towns and cities, nightlife, and outdoor activities.
All Global E3 participants will be active members of their host university and given full access to students associations, clubs, organizations, and recreation facilities. Each institution will have its cadre of faculty and staff who will welcome you to campus and introduce you to the social and academic networks on campus.
