Program Description:

The ProgramT

The Universidad de Magallanes (UMAG) is located in the Magellan and Chilean Antarctic Region of Chilean Patagonia. UMAG has relationships with over 30 universities and institutes from around the globe. Many scholars come to UMAG umagwith interests in marine scinces, natural resources, and glaciology. Scholarship and research at UMAG focuses on the extreme austral tip of the Americas, inlcuing Patagonia, the Sub-Antarctic Archipelago, and Antarctica. The University works with the Institute of Patagonia, the antarctic Programs Center, the Center for Quaternary Students in Fuego-Patagonia, and the Omora Ethnobiotanical park.

The main campus is located in Puerto Natales. Puerto Natales is the capital of the Province of Ultima Esperanza ("Last Hope"), one of the four provinces that make up the Region de Magallanes y de la Antartica Chilena, in the southernmost part of Chile. A city of aproximately 20,000 people, the area is home to a growing eco-tourism trade.

The Academics

Students will enroll as a visiting student. Students typically register for 12 credits. With the exception of some classes within the Education school, all courses are taught in Spanish (list of courses, not translated http://www.umag.cl/facultades/fachum.php).


In order to earn credit at UConn for courses completed on this program, individual courses must be approved by a designated UConn course evaluator and assigned a UConn course number. Complete instructions for this process can be found under Getting Academic Credit on the navigation bar on the left of the Study Abroad Homepage.

The Experience

UConn students will will receive assistance from the international office at the University in finding off-campus accommodations. There is amble housing close to campus that is very affordable.

The Department of University Extension at UMAG sponsors community service and citycultural activities at the loval elementary and high school that students may which to participate in. There are numerous cultural activies held on campus throughout the semester. In addition, there are university choral groups and a folk-dance and theater company. The University Student at the Universidad de Magallanes normally live at home or find their own accomodations near campus.

In the region one can visit The Magallanes Forest Reserve, Ski Cerro Mirador, Isla Magdalena Natural Monument, and the Seno Otway Penguin Colony.
