Program Description:

The Program

The city of Maastricht, bordering both Germany and Belgium, grew up around the crossing of the Maas known to the Romans as the Mosae Trajectum. The bridge at Maastricht formed a vital link in the Roman communication route from Gaul to Germany built under Emperor Augustus (27 B.C. -14 A.D.). Ever a symbol of European communication, it was chosen as the site for the signing of the charter of the European Community in 1993. As part of the Universiteit Maastricht, the Center for European Studies (CES) was established in 1989. Its Study Europe program      focuses on the economic, political, and socio-cultural aspects of European integration. The highlights of the two week orientation period are two study trips: one three day trip to Brussels and Paris and one two day trip to Amsterdam. If you go to the "homepage" website mentioned above, please click on the Programs button in the upper left; choose Undergraduate Programs, then click on the Study Europe Program for detailed information.

The Academics

The Study Europe Program is designed for students at the junior or senior level at UConn. It is approved by both CLAS and the School of Business.  Students take four courses. Each semester is divided in two "block periods", and during each block period a student will take two courses. The largest number of courses are grouped under the categories of "Economics and Business Administration" and "Politics and International Relations". Examples are the Economics of European Integration, International Management, and Legal and Political Aspects of European Integration. Classes are taught in English by professors either from Universiteit Maastricht or from other European universities. Click Netherlands-Maastricht University Course Equivalentsfor a listing of courses previously taken by UCONN students. You may also try a different type  of course - a Problem Based Learning (PBL) course - which combines problem solving with textbook knowledge.

The Experience

There are many good reasons for studying in Maastricht (population 115,000). Situated at the extreme southern tip of The Netherlands midway between the cities of Brussels and Bonn, a modern Maastricht provides easy access to the major institutions of the European Union (EU). As the oldest city in the country, Maastricht is blessed with a wealth of historic buildings providing an attractive mix of rural charm and  cosmopolitan flair. Located at the banks of the river Maas, you can find art galleries, jazz cafes, antique shops, gothic churches and restaurants side by side. Perhaps the best reason for choosing Maastricht is the high academic standard of Universiteit Maastricht. It provides you with an opportunity to study at an international institute of education and innovation. For several years Universiteit Maastricht has been ranked as the # 1 university in the Netherlands. It is the most international university of the Netherlands, with students from all over the world sharing the classroom.

CES organizes housing for students at the International Guesthouse in Maastricht. This is the University student dormitory where all international (exchange) students live. Students live in double or single rooms or studios with a kitchen.

In order to earn credit at UConn for courses completed on this program, individual courses must be approved by a designated UConn course evaluator and assigned a UConn course number. Complete instructions for this process can be found under Getting Academic Credit on the navigation bar on the left of the Study Abroad Homepage.
