 Proposing a Program

The Office of Study Abroad is eager to help faculty and departments develop new study abroad programs. We are particularly interested in developing UConn faculty-led programs that combine coursework and some kind of experiential (hands-on) learning within the context of a coherent and focused curriculum. The experiential component can be in the form of research projects, internships, unique observational experiences, artistic performances, oral histories, video projects, or any thing else that might be of interest to you. Programs can vary in duration: they can be held during Winter Intersession, the May Term, part of the summer, or for an entire semester.  We are happy to brainstorm with you, as well as share our experience regarding logistics, budgets, curricula, etc.

If you are interested in developing a faculty-led program, you will need to complete the Program Proposal Form . Please note that staff at the Office of Study Abroad are more than willing to meet with you anytime to discuss ideas that you have for an international program. After the completion of the Form, you will need to attain approvals, in the form of signatures, from your department head, the dean of your school/college, the director of Study Abroad, and the Study Abroad Committee (SAC).  We ask that each proposal be submitted to the Director of Study Abroad, per the instructions at the top of the form, no later than nine months prior to the planned start of the proposed program.

The department heads and deans signing the program proposal form are approving the curriculum, as well as the faculty leading the program, including, where applicable, being relieved of her/his teaching responsibilities at the UConn home campus. Final approvals will also include feasability (budget, safety, logistics, etc), as well as whether the program might cannibalize other existing study abroad programs.

Faculty proposals are reviewed twice a semester by SAC, and faculty can expect to receive an approval, rejection, or a "revise and resubmit" shortly after those meetings from SAC.
