Application Process

OverviewSt. Andrews, Scotland

Congratulations on taking your first step towards studying abroad. You should begin by defining your personal and academic objectives and then deciding on the type and location of the program that suits them. To search for a program, click on the find a program link at the top or bottom of your screen. Limiting your search criteria to one or two items will give you the best results. You may search for programs according to country, city, region, class status, academic area, type of program (e.g., faculty-led, internship, enroll at foreign university, intensive-language), minimum GPA, prior language experience, language of instruction, and more. For a listing of all programs, click here.

You can also make an appointment online with an advisor to narrow your options and to help you to decide on a specific program. Which direction to go?

If you are interested in participating in a program not currently offered by the Office of Study Abroad, please see a study abroad advisor.

The actual application process for study abroad at UConn has never been easier. Most of the items needed to complete your application, including questionnaires and student contracts, can be done online. Some materials must be submitted in person to the Office of Study Abroad.

Steps to applying

Step 1. Once in the program brochure, click on the "Apply Now" link in the center of either the top or bottom of the webpage of the program you have chosen, and follow the instructions to create your own personal homepage (click for an example).Cape Town UConn students will need their NetID and password to complete this process. Non-UConn students will need to complete an online form after clicking on the link at the bottom of the page that you will see after you click "Apply Now."

Step 2. On your personal homepage, you will see a checklist of everything you need to do. There are three types of documents: material submissions, such as an offical transcript and a $25.00 application fee, that you will need to submit in person to the Office of Study Abroad; signature documents, such as a refund policy, that you will need to read over and "digitally sign" online; and questionnaires, such as the application and essay, that you will need to complete and submit online. You will also need to request two letters of recommendation Australiafrom your professors, TA's or academic advisor. You can make these requests online by simply clicking on the appropriate link on the right hand side of your personal homepage and typing in the name of your instructor. If you cannot locate your instructor's email address using the online system, you will need to print out the recommendation form and send or hand deliver it to that person. For a screenshot and description of a personal homepage please click here.

Please note that third-party providers, including Australearn, Boston University, CET, CIEE, IES, IFSA-Butler, School for International Training (SIT), Semester at Sea, American University in Cairo (AUC), and School for Field Studies (SFS), require you to submit a separate application, in addition to the one required by UConn's Office of Study Abroad. You will be asked to submit a "signature document" confirming that you have sent this application to the appropriate provider. These programs may also have their own additional application fees.

*IMPORTANT NOTE on recommendation letters for third-party providers*

Third-party providers accept accept UConn recommendation forms and vice versa. Therefore, no need to ask the recommender to complete two forms. If you request, we would be happy to copy the recommendation we have on file for you to include with materials that you will be sending to the third party. Please request this to aldo.tedjomoeljono@uconn.edu or jessica.williamson@uconn.edu or in person at CUE 303. It is YOUR responsibility to mail the entire third-party application, including recommendations, to the third party.

Step 3. After you have completed the application, check your "homepage" and UConn email on a regular basis for reminders of items that you have not yet submitted. You can check your homepage anytime by clicking on Login in the upper right hand corner of the page. You will receive your decision notification through Denmarkemail.

Step 4. After you have been accepted, you will have 10 days to decide if you would like to participate in the study abroad program. If you are a UConn student going on a Fall, Spring or Academic Year program the Study Abroad Fee of $475.00 will appear on your UConn fee bill upon digitally signing the Student Contract. UConn Summer and Winter Study Abroad students will be billed $400.00 plus a Summer Enrollment Fee of $45.00. Non-UConn students going in the Fall, Spring or Academic Year will have to mail in their $475.00 fee to the Office of Study Abroad. Non-UConn Summer and Winter Study Abroad students pay a $65.00 Summer Enrollment Fee, in addition to the $400.00 Summer Study Abroad Fee. The total amount of $465.00 should be mailed to the Office of Study Abroad.Senegal

Step 5. After you have been accepted, there is still a lot to do. You must submit additional online and hard copy materials, such as a student contract and course evaluation forms. Only after you have submitted these materials may you participate in the study abroad program.

Step 6. Finally, you will be required to attend a study abroad pre-departure orientation.
