                                                  Course Substitution

If you discussed your courses and how they will count in your audit with your academic adviser prior to departure, you have discussed "course substitution," NOT "course accreditation."  Course accreditation is the process of obtaining a UConn course number for a course taken during a study abroad program.  Course substitution is applying that course (after it's been accredited) toward your major, minor, or general education requirements. Your advisor can only discuss course substitutions (not accreditation) as they apply to your major, minor, or general requirements.

To Apply a Course Towards a General Education Requirement:

Your school or college will decide if specific study abroad courses can be used to fulfill General Education requirements.  Some courses have already been preapproved, and you may consult the CLAS office to see their Gen Ed Pre-Approved Substitutions list.

Important:  Even if a substitution has been pre-approved, you will still need to individually petition your school for the substitution.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS)

You may petition the CLAS Academic Services Center for substitutions once all of your study abroad courses have been posted.  Please complete the form that is found on the CLAS webpage: http://www.services.clas.uconn.edu/studyabroad.html.  If the course has already been approved as a substitution, you still need to apply by filling out the form.  If the course has not been approved, you need to send a syllabus along with the completed form.

Neag School of Education

Education majors should make an appointment with Ann Traynor to discuss and review course substitutions for general education requirements.

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AgNR) will usually follow the same list of pre-approved general education substitutions as accepted by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students will need to contact departments and/or Patricia Jepson for questions regarding requirements for their majors, and may also request additional courses to be reviewed for general education requirements.

School of Engineering

Engineering majors should make an appointment with Dean Wood or Brian Schwartz to discuss and review course substitutions for general education requirements.

School of Business

Business majors should make an appointment with Dean Clark to discuss and review possible course substitutions for both University and School of Business general education requirements prior to studying abroad.  After returning from study abroad and once all courses have been posted, students must submit a SUBSTITUTION REQUEST form along with an unofficial transcript, a course description and syllabus, and, if appropriate, copies of any earlier e-mails, etc., indicating prior approval of the course. SUBSTITUTION REQUEST forms are available in BUSN 121. to discuss and review course substitutions for general education requirements.

Other Schools

Consult the appropriate dean or advisor to discuss and review course substitutions for general education requirements.
